John Tamihere

John Tamihere – Ngati Porou, Whakatohea and Tainui, Irish and Scottish.

John graduated with a Law and Arts degrees from Auckland University before starting work for the Department of Maori Affairs and Maori Land Court. He became CEO of Waipareira Trust in 1991 and in 1999 entered Parliament where he was Chairman of the Maori Select Affairs Committee and also a member of the high powered Finance and Expenditure Select Committee.

In 2002 he was appointed Minister of Small Business, Minister of Youth Affairs, Minister of Statistics and Minister for Land Information as well as Associate Minister of Maori Affairs. After Parliament, JT returned to lead Te Whanau O Waipareira Trust out of major financial ruin which he accomplished through prudent management, ensuring its future.

He is the co-host of a nationwide Talkback radio show, and also fronts a TV game show – Think Tank.

John has been named Person of the Year by the Sunday Star Times, New Zealander of the Year by North & South magazine, and Man of the Year by Metro magazine.
